Teaching Philosophy
My philosophy of teaching is newly developed and has come from many classes on education, but minimal experience thus far. As I look at my beliefs with regards to teaching and my students' learning, I have several requirements for my teaching style:
I believe that it is my job, as a teacher, to show the most passion for what I do in order to get my students excited about attending class each day. I want to structure my lessons so that students are not only learning the material, but having a good time doing so. Teachers that demonstrate a passion for their occupation and a curiosity for new technologies in the classroom are the kinds of teachers that make a difference in their students' lives. This kind of teaching is what sets an example for students to be eager learners and to create a positive learning environment.
I believe that students need not only the skills to succeed within the classroom, but also the knowledge of how to succeed outside of it. It is important for me, as an educator, that I provide these things to my students. I want to be able to effectively give them creative and new material that will help them to succeed and gain the knowledge expected in their grade level. Along with this, I will strive to provide a safe environment, pushing my students personally as well as academically. I want my students to develop a positive work ethic in and outside of the classroom.
In addition, it is important that my students feel safe within my classroom. I want the environment that I provide to be one that is positive and beneficial to my students. I believe it is more effective for students and their learning if this is the case. Students that feel comfortable and not judged in their surroundings are more apt to do well in their studies. This is one of the things that has become most important in my life as a student. From personal experience, I have performed better in environments where I had a voice and did not feel incompetent.
I believe that using learner-oriented teaching provides better learning, overall. I want to make sure that my students are learning and that they are enjoying class each and every day. As a teacher, I need to know what kind of learners each of my students are, what kinds of activities are best for them, and what their goals are for the class. All of these things will allow me to build lesson plans that are more unique to my class and more successful with the learners that I have. I will also need this information to find the holes in my students' knowledge. This will allow me to be more efficient and effective at providing scaffolding for them. I promote group work as it allows students to help each other learn together.
It is my belief that by using these techniques and being an inspirational teacher, that it will inspire my students to be all that they can be. I want to target each and every student, developing curriculum that fits them personally as well as allowing them to work as a class. I strive to have an environment where all my students feel safe and free to share their thoughts and opinions. I also want to show my students how fun learning can truly be. I want them to enjoy and look forward to coming to class each day to learn something new. I want my students to want to learn and push themselves and be creative within my classroom. I hope that all of these things will make me an exceptional educator.
